Matthew 28:5-6 Sunday School Lesson for Kids
“The angel answered the women, “Don’t be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who has been crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying.”

Jesus rose from the dead, just like He said He would, and that changes everything.
Ask the class: 'Has anyone ever expected something to be in a certain place and found it completely gone?' Give kids a moment to share, then tell them the women who went to Jesus's tomb had that exact experience, except what they found changed the whole world.
- The angel's first words were 'Don't be afraid.' Scary moments can lead to the best news, and teachers can help kids see that the women's fear turned into joy.
- The angel said Jesus rose 'just like he said.' Jesus had actually told His followers this would happen. God's Word always comes true.
- The angel invited the women to come and see the empty tomb for themselves. God does not just ask us to believe blindly, the evidence was right there.
- The angel told the women not to be afraid. Have you ever gotten news that seemed scary at first but turned out to be really good?
- The angel said Jesus rose 'just like he said.' What does it mean that Jesus kept His promise? Can you think of other promises in the Bible that God kept?
- If you had been one of those women at the tomb that morning, what do you think you would have done after hearing the angel's words?
Challenge kids to tell one person today the same thing the angel told the women, that Jesus is not in the tomb because He has risen, just like He said.
Bible Context
Matthew 28:5-6 sits at the very climax of Matthew's Gospel, the account written by the apostle Matthew, a former tax collector who became one of Jesus's twelve disciples. The women referenced are identified earlier in Matthew 28:1 as Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, who had come to see the tomb following the Sabbath. The angel's words, particularly 'just like he said,' are a deliberate echo of Jesus's own predictions about His resurrection found earlier in Matthew (see 16:21, 17:23, and 20:19), giving this moment its weight, the entire story has been building to this confirmation that Jesus is who He claimed to be.
