Genesis 1:1 Sunday School Lesson for Kids
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Before anything existed, God was already there, and He made it all.
Ask the class to close their eyes and imagine nothing, no sky, no ground, no light, no sound. Give them a few seconds, then ask what that felt like. That moment of imagination is the jumping-off point for why Genesis 1:1 is such a big deal.
- The phrase 'in the beginning' tells us there was a moment when nothing existed yet, and God started it all.
- The words 'heavens and the earth' are a way of saying everything, every planet, every ocean, every creature.

Chapter 1 opens not with a philosophical argument but with a confident, poetic declaration that sets the foundation for everything that follows in Scripture. In the ancient world, where surrounding cultures had complex creation myths involving warring gods, Genesis 1:1 was a striking claim: one God, unchallenged, brought everything into existence.
