1 John 4:19 Sunday School Lesson for Kids

We love him, because he first loved us.
1 John 4:19

Scripture: World English Bible (Public Domain).

Big Idea

We love God because He loved us before we even knew to love Him.

Opening Hook

Ask the class if they can think of a time someone did something kind for them before they even asked. Let one or two kids share, then connect it to the idea that God did the greatest kind thing first.

Teaching Points
  • The verse says 'we love him, because he first loved us.' That word 'first' is important. God did not wait to see if we would love Him. He loved us first.
  • God showed His love by sending Jesus. His love was an action, not just a feeling.
  • Our love for God is like an echo. It starts with what He did, not what we did.

Application & Send-Off

Challenge students to do one kind thing for someone this week and to remember as they do it that they are sharing love that started with God.

Bible Context

1 John was written by the apostle John, likely near the end of the first century, to a community of believers facing confusion about who Jesus really was and what genuine Christian life looks like. Chapter 4 is one of the most concentrated passages on love in all of Scripture, and verse 19 lands near the end of a long argument John has been building: that God is love, that He proved it by sending His Son, and that His people are now called to love one another as a result. This verse is not a standalone motto. It is the conclusion of a theological argument about the origin and nature of Christian love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Keep it concrete and personal. Before you were born, before you could talk or walk or even know His name, God already loved you. You can compare it to a parent who loves a baby long before the baby can do anything or say 'I love you back.' The love started with God, not with us.
